MOON FLOWER: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Technology

Combining Korean Craftsmanship with High-Tech Engineering

MOON FLOWER stands out from other lighting designs due to its use of traditional Korean materials such as bamboo, wood, and handmade paper. These constraints give the design its unique properties and add a touch of Korean heritage to any space. The use of LED lighting and CNC carving ensures that the design is not only visually appealing but also functional.

The lighting design consists of three main components: a bamboo joint and round paper reflection with LED lights, a bamboo branch, and a round wooden base. The inner lighting part is made of aluminum, carved using CNC technology, and finished with anodizing. The bamboo joint is adorned with printed patterns using a hot iron, adding to its traditional charm. The back paper reflection is made of handmade Korean paper from mulberry trees, giving it a delicate and moon-like quality.

With dimensions of 310(W) x 50(D) x 440(H) and a base measuring 155(W) x 155(D) x 25(H), MOON FLOWER is a versatile lighting design suitable for various spaces. The materials used include bamboo, ebony wood, aluminum, and teak wood. The design was realized through a collaborative effort with LISTEN COMMUNICATION CO, LTD.

MOON FLOWER functions as a general stand lighting, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. Its main purpose is to create a mood, making any room feel cozy and familiar. The design was exhibited at the 2014 CRAFT TREND FAIR in Seoul and was part of a project that lasted from June 2014 to November 2014.

The MOON FLOWER lighting design is the result of extensive research into traditional materials and their integration into modern furniture and lighting. The designer aimed to bring back traditional materials such as wood and handmade mulberry paper, which have become less prevalent in our daily lives. By combining these materials with modern technology, MOON FLOWER bridges the gap between tradition and innovation.

Creating a lighting design that successfully incorporates traditional materials presented its challenges. Protecting the wood and paper from heat was essential, ensuring the design's longevity and functionality. However, these challenges were overcome, resulting in a design that seamlessly blends tradition and technology.

MOON FLOWER has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements while also providing fulfillment and positive feelings, contributing to a better world.
